I’ve been living on lower cape off and on since the 70’s I started painting 9 years ago I’m mostly self taught but I’ve studied with Steve Kennedy and have taken class with Cynthia Packard. My work is representational , inspirational of my feelings and surroundings . I listen to an inner voice and paint from my heart and spirit. I would say it’s abstract Impressionism. It’s colorful and I have many paintings of local places from Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown. I live in town year round I be been to openings and showed recently at the commons. I’ve been coming here since 1971 . My children were born here my daughter and family lives in Truro .

Susan Pierce

susan@susanpierceart.com

Susan is inspired by light and sky; she captures the beauty of a scene through its interplay with its surroundings. She lives in the Boston area and, in summers on Cape Cod, she enjoys painting plein air and participating in workshops with other artists. Susan is a physician, retired from a career caring for cancer patients. Now, after decades of focus on science and medicine, she is engaged in the creative process of applying paint to panel. Primarily a impressionist landscape painter, she also enjoys painting lighthearted whimsical pieces to lift the spirit.

I have owned a home in Ptown for many years and saw this amazing place develop and open. Some friends (Kathy Cotter, Bob Ross, Mary Giammarino) have had exhibits there and some have utilized the office space. A few years ago, I had a painting in your community show. I spend most of the summer in Ptown, enjoying the beauty, plein air classes and gathering with friends.

This submission is for the art of three members of my family: my grandson (Joel Gray, Jr), my late wife (Mary Jean Shah), and myself (Gautam N. Shah). A biographical sketch of each is provided below. JOEL GRAY, JR. I am from Milton, MA. I am an Illustration major at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and will be a senior there in September 2022. I have been drawing since childhood, and have always gravitated towards cartoons. However, since starting college, I have been branching out to other styles and mediums such as charcoal, ink and even a little bit of painting which is something I am new to. I have been able to incorporate the simplicity and style that I was used to into different materials, and this has inspired me to tackle aspects of art that I did not attempt before. I still hold cartooning as my favorite but I am bold enough to branch out into unfamiliar territory that I would not have seen myself going into only a couple of years ago.

GAUTAM N. SHAH I was born and raised in India, came to USA for graduate studies and stayed. Wellfleet, MA is my home now. I have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and so art seems an unlikely activity for me. But I had dabbled in it as a boy, and with the genes of my father who was an accomplished artist himself, and inspired by my artist wife Jean, I took up art after I turned 60. It is now a favorite pastime and a source of pleasure. It also teaches me patience which I do not claim as my dominant characteristic. I took up pencil drawings first and then included acrylics. I enjoy both. My unfulfilled dream is to produce brush strokes like Van Gogh and pencil lines like my father.

MARY JEAN SHAH Jean was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and was educated with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, an MBA, and also a CPA - another unlikely combination. Jean was a naturally artful person - as a cook, as a gardener, as artist, as an observer. Her artistic passion was water color which she pursued with determination and studiousness. Her goal was to achieve looseness in her compositions and to this end, she devoted a good part of her time to exercises using books and other sources and occasional workshops. A traveler's kit was always in her back-pack and she turned out delightful water color sketches on trips. Occasionally, she used acrylics in her studio, and the few works she produced suggest strongly that she would have excelled at acrylics too with time, had she not been taken away from this world unexpectedly at an early age of 69 when she was in the best of health and fitness.

 Dianne Kopser

2 Englewood Drive

508.237.1321
dianne17@comcast.net

Dianne Kopser grew up in the lush Hudson Valley, painting the river and Catskill mountains. She studied art, including printmaking and glassblowing at U.Va. and Alfred University. After discovering her dreams of huge glass projects were unrealistic (She didn’t have the upper-body strength to control large quantities of glass as they wobbled on the end of the gathering-pipe), she packed up her worldly possessions and moved to Provincetown. There she has worked in oils, clay, watercolor and mixed media, to settle for the moment upon oils. These offer her the flexibility to layer fine, thin washes of color below thick impasto, building up a lively surface. Focusing on a single theme, the bird sanctuary behind her home, Dianne is concentrating on the beauty of individual trees. Their varying prominence evolves as the season progresses, offering Dianne the opportunity to spotlight first the tiny sprigs of oak leaves, then perhaps the structure of a fallen snag behind a budding hydrangea. As the scene changes, so does her work. The early spring this year brought fog, fog and more fog, so for the most part, this series reflects that, but as the solstice came, so did brighter light and more vibrant paint. The spare structure of the trunks and branches has given way to luscious leaf and flower. Dianne looks forward to the fall’s drama with excitement. Dianne is a Chaplain at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Provincetown, and sings second soprano in the Outer Cape Chorale and Chamber Singers.

I'm an independent documentary filmmaker/photographer and musician. My partner is a former modern dancer. I've photographed her company for over a decade and have assembled a selection of my images and her personal photos, which collectively depict a career spanning 40 years. There is also feature length documentary film for consideration as a screening event (see website link above).

I grew up in Falmouth but have been going down cape to the Provincetown/Truro area for several decades. 3 years ago I spent a week in the Dune Shacks of Ptown and it was magical. My current film project is a meditation piece on Cape Cod, focusing on the beauty of the National Seashore lands.

I recently attended an exhibition by friend/painter John Koch.

Greg has been an active photographer for over 30 years. Although his professional career led him to become an entrepreneur and CEO in the hospitality software space, including a recent exit to private equity, continued to maintain his artistic passion throughout his working life. While majoring in hotel administration at Cornell, Greg took many of his electives in the fine arts school, with a focus on black and white photography. Photography and his work have been closely connected. Photography has always given him a way of looking at problems from a different perspective. Just like motivating an organization towards a goal, a photographer strives to illicit a feeling in a viewer, not just record an event. Greg was fortunate that his work allowed him to travel the world. His camera has travelled the Great Wall of China, the world. His camera has travelled the Great Wall of China, the glaciers of Iceland, the great cities of Sydney, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Kiev, Athens, St. Petersburg, London, the Killing Fields of Cambodia, the energetic streets of São Paulo and New York, and quiet places like Darien, Georgia. His camera has travelled over 4 million miles.

As you probably know I am a painter who has had gallery representation in Ptown for a number of years….however, AMP is closing this October will be my last show and I have been informed only 4 paintings will be included in the closing group show. 2023 year I have no gallery - and if there’s an opening in the calendar- i ask because I believe a year to just concentrate on making a body of work with the goal to showcase the work as a complete series would be beneficial to my practice AND my livelihood, as I primarily rely on gallery sales to make ends meet. Thank you for your consideration - I understand if I don’t meet the requirements but wanted to put my hat in the ring so to speak. It would be an honor to see my work hanging at The Commons. A portion of all sales 10-20% will go to The Commons. (More sales bigger %) thank you for your consideration. Karen Cappotto

Gary J Cosenza is an artist who grew up near Buffalo, New York. He fell in love with Provincetown several years ago and is now fortunate enough to reside there. Gary has always been drawn to the natural beauty, the amazing light and deep blue sky that Provincetown provides. Many of his paintings contain a pathway or streetscape found in Provincetown. Gary hopes his paintings will help people remember a special place in Provincetown and they will wonder what can be found along the street or pathway as they travel into the painting.

I have been coming to Ptown since the 80's and was lucky enough to to be able to purchase a condo here in 2017. My husband and I spend at least six months continuously in Ptown each year along with short visits during the off season.

Rick Bankhead is a plein air impressionist painter who from his earliest years loved painting. As a very near-sighted child, he created his own world within the details of his drawing. When he was nine years old, a few of his drawings were entered into an art exhibit among other elementary school students at The West Virginia University with acclaim. Rick took a career path in dentistry finding that dentistry offered him an outlet for his artistic skills. After graduating from The Ohio State University Dental School, he moved to Boston to begin private practice. He continued to nurture his passion for painting, taking classes with David Addison Small at Mass College of Art and with Ed Stitt at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (now affiliated with Tufts University). Since 2020, he has made oil painting his second career, taking additional classes at The Cape School of Art and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). Currently he is honing his skills with John Clayton, Hilda Neilly and Syd Hale at The Cape School and with Jim Peters at PAAM. Rick is a member The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, PAAM, The Provincetown Arts Society, and The Cape Cod School of Art. He is inspired with the magical lighting of Provincetown and seeks to capture that light in his work.

After years of shooting high profile television commercials, I traded truckloads of movie making equipment for a pocket sized camera and an iPhone.  With unencumbered simplicity and instinctual framing, my images encompass a wide range subject matter – landscape, architecture, still life, abstract. I shoot with no thematic forethought but let my images trigger collections based on light, color, composition and style.

I strive to capture the image of the present and the “mistake” of the moment and am continually amazed how often “disassociated” images suddenly blend together to create unexpected “ad hoc” series.  My work has been shaped by the masters of advertising still photography, and the cinematic style of the classic film cinematographers I have had the good fortune of working with.

Recently I have been experimenting with tonal texturing and the dimensional impact it adds to nature’s natural color palette My photography, like my life, is a nod to the curiosity of what tomorrow’s light will bring.

Thank you for your interest. Connect with me on Instagram to see some of my latest work, or reach out directly if you are interested in a particular image.

Elizabeth Gabriel Brooke, innkeeper and photographer, is well-known in Provincetown and respected everywhere on the Cape, not just for her stunning wildlife and nature photography in the local area, but also for her selfless commitments to animal welfare and environmental preservation. Elizabeth Brooke has always pursued photography - first as an avocation and later, a professional. Her life as a photographer has taken her on a voyage carrying her along what is here, right now, in the moment. When she looks through the lens, her mind attunes to the edges, capturing the raw quality and feeling of the moment. When she unites with something beyond the camera, she doesn't think “change my f-stop, move right, left, up, down”, she senses what is right, what just is: creative intuition. Her goal has always been to produce images to be shared.
