Alex Stadler  is a multidisciplinary artist, painter, author, textile designer, illustrator, producer and curator. Stadler has written and illustrated more than 10 published books for children and adults (Farrar Strauss & Giroux; Harcourt; Simon and Schuster; Scholastic; Chronicle), most of which deal with themes of emotional intelligence. Stadler has created public artwork and murals for Colette Paris, Reading Terminal Market and Comcast in Philadelphia, and Saks 5th Avenue's flagship store in New York City. As an illustrator/textile designer, he has created his own line of knitted scarves and blankets, stadler-Kahn, and has collaborated with and designed for Comme des Garçons, Jack Lenor Larsen, GapKid, Todd Oldham,  and Whoopi Goldberg. In Philadelphia, Stadler has curated shows at The Art Alliance, The Clay Studio and The Independence Seaport Museum. These included a retrospective of the work of ceramic artist Rose Cabat, 1917-2016, whose work is held in the collections of MoMA and the Smithsonian, and Homework, a dual show of Erin Endicott's embroidered paintings and the neo-crochet pieces of Asimina Chremos. In April of 2019 Stadler had a one-person show of oil paintings, textiles and ceramics at The Clay Studio. In May of 2023 he had a show of his large scale memorial urns-also at The Clay Studio. He has shown his porcelain and stoneware pieces at Big Apple Design in Milan, Room 68 in Provincetown, Egan Rittenhouse in Philadelphia and Kneeland & co in Los Angeles. Since 2012, he has been a featured artist at annual or biannual live customization drawing events in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka) as well as at one-off drawing events in Miami and Milan. In June of 2022, Stadler created a public ceremony and memorial procession in honor of the unclaimed of the early years of the AIDS crisis which began at the William Way Community Center and then moved through the streets of Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood. This collaborative work involving the work of living and deceased artists and designers chosen by Stadler was entitled Gone and For Ever, was produced through a grant from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. Stadler recently completed a documentary film about the project.

 Dean h. katica

2 Thistlemore Way,
Provincetown, Ma

deankh72@gmail.com

Dean H. Katica is a Boston/Provincetown based self-taught artist of Bosnian origin. The war, ethnic cleansing, and genocide in Bosnia during early 1990’s forced his family to move to Germany where his father lived and worked since the 1960’s. His childhood home was taken by Serbs. The whole family immigrated to the United States in 1998. He recounts his father going from the USA to visit Bosnia after the war ended and in a bizarre turn of events ended up having coffee with the same people who forcefully occupied their family home. When he asked his father if this was the hardest thing he ever had to do, his father responded:”once you let go of hard feelings, you put responsibility on them”. The war has left a big scar in his early life that shaped his destiny but also his creative spirit. Now a U.S. citizen, he is fluent in Bosnian, German, and English languages and has strong cultural influences of all three countries. He specializes in oil and acrylic, still life and seascape paintings that often meet at an abstract and landscape realist intersection using underpainting, dry brushing, glazing, pallet knife and sgraffito techniques. He is a registered nurse who worked throughout the pandemic in Covid units at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The stress of every day hospital life, pain and suffering he often witnesses in his patients, has forced him to retreat to the tranquility of seascapes and create art as a way of finding his inner peace. He has been creating art for the past 15 years and hopes to progress and collaborate with local artists in coproducing a discursive piece melting several styles into a cohesive piece of art. He is influenced by regional tales that include fascinating stories of life, hardship, love, mystery and the beauty of Cape Cod. He names his paintings based on the stories that exist in the local and regional folklore. In his artwork, he incorporates all five wonders of Cape Cod, with lighthouse adorned National Seashore being at the top of his artistic expression.

My photography draws on the natural beauty of sand and sea, with a deep appreciation for the peace and serenity that comes through connection with nature. I've been going to the outer Cape for more than 5 decades, and my work translates that natural beauty into present moments that endure. Taken over many decades, my photographs from the outer Cape reflect a delightful beauty and diversity that I find so nourishing. These images I create help me to stay more anchored in presence, even when surrounded by turbulence and difficult times. Before retiring from emergency medicine 2 years ago, I received an “Always Thinking Ahead” grant from the Tufts Medical Center to place 5 large (30”x60”) images in the emergency department, with the goal of reducing stress and anxiety for patients and staff. With overwhelmingly positive feedback, I am now working to soften the difficult moments we all face using my tranquil images of the Cape and beyond.

Jamie Ham is an artist with a prolific portfolio of work. He has been producing his multi-media works since 1985. He primarily uses a felt tip pen, watercolor, and pastel. The images are often placed in digital format, with creative elements in place. Often he will use paper clippings for his inspiration and is often, ironically, right on in his commentary about the subject. This is a reference to the late artist Romare Bearden. He once went to one of his exhibits and was memorized. The collage technique Jamie uses is quite similar. The pallet is also akin to Romare’s. Jamie is exceptionally different in that he is Down's Syndrome. But his special needs are not his focus. His focus is on making art.” My sister, Ailie Ham, helps me market my artwork. If you want to find out more about her and what she does, here is her website, www.ailie.com My family friend Louis LaFevre has also always been supportive of my art. We will be planning a 2024 show in his honor, as he is one of my largest patrons.

I have been a career artist for over 30 years and much of that time I have lived and painted in Provincetown. I started out as a plain-air painter under the tutelage of Lois Griffel then the director of The Cape School of Art. My years of painting from nature and life have served me well as a studio painter as evident in my current works. My painting is grounded in representation then abstracted by color, line and shape. Walking a fine line between the two disciplines is the constant challenge that keeps me engaged as an artist. Originally from Newton, MA I did my undergraduate at the Hartford Art School of the University of Hartford with a double major in Art and Art Education. Later I pursued a masters degree in printmaking from RISD. I have exhibited nationally and internationally and my works are part of corporate and private collections as well as PAAM and the NJ State Museum.

As a plein air painter, I feel most at home painting on the streets of Provincetown and the outer towns of Cape Cod. I’ve studied with some of the finest artists and feel part of the community. During the fall and winter months, I return to the lovely colors of Pennsylvania. I complete still lifes and landscapes.
As a colorist, I am interested in how light affects color. I’ve had many opportunities to display my work in galleries
and juried shows in Pa. and the outer cape. Participating
with The Addison Gallery, Orleans, Ma. in invitational plein air events; “After Hopper”, “Finding Thoreau”, “Paint the Garden”.
I feel fortunate to be apart of such wonderful group of plein air painters. Currently, I am a guest artist with the Larkin Gallery, Provincetown and Harwich Port, Ma. I look forward to learning from each new canvas.

My proposal is to have each area of the room represent a segment of my work by theme (Tentatively: Provincetown, South Dakota, Indian Country People & Politics, etc.) and will include large and medium-format photographs in simple, contemporary presentation, mixed media (photography/collage/painting), bits of my writing, and projected films on each wall. There will be stills included that tell a story from each film (for example, photos that I took on set during the filming of Heroin: Cape Cod, HBO). The centerpiece of the exhibit will be the image that has been acquired by the Obama Presidential Museum for inclusion in their opening exhibition in 2025 on a 6'x6' panel, which is an image of Apsaalooke (Crow) Indian young women in traditional dress listening to Obama speak at their tribal grounds. The number (and size) of pieces will be determined by working in collaboration with a curator (likely Sam Tager) so that the room is not overcrowded yet takes advantage of the usable space.

As an artist, my work surrounding Provincetown invokes many emotions. It’s magical to watch the watercolors come alive on the paper. It’s my hope that each piece presented brings up fond memories and a shared appreciation for the community. I've always had a creative gift from a young age, but it wasn’t until turning 40 did I begin to explore my creative talent once again by taking a watercolor painting class. In the meantime, to stay connected with the community, I have a social media following surrounding the curb appeal of Provincetown called Curbing.

We were engaged on the jetty during our annual Holly Folly trip back in December 2018. We often speak about moving to Ptown as year-round residents, until then my art keeps us connected to the community. Provincetown will forever be our second home, and will always hold a special place in my heart! The unique architecture and historic structures continuously provide new inspiration and love for the community.

I hold a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and have worked as a sales consultant at galleries both in Provincetown and NYC.

My work is small, but I can fill the wall, in 2021 I had about 50 pieces.

Michael Stewart works in a variety of media including ceramic sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and multi-media video installation. His style ranges from highly realistic to non-figurative. A passionate artist-activist, he occasionally delves into protest art addressing urgent socio-political situations. His sculpture “Collapse of the Patriarchy” was recently selected for inclusion in the Phillip’s Collection exhibit “What a Relief: Small Sculptures” at Phillips@thearc in Washington, DC. In 2020, he created a multi-media installation incorporating video and sculpture entitled “Reckoning: An Installation on Political Power, Greed and the Climate Emergency,” which was exhibited in New York City public parks. A politically themed show called “States of Heads: Unauthorized Portraits” was created by Stewart in 2004 and exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the Northeast.

Ålthough my permanent residence is in New York City, for many years I've stayed in Provincetown during different seasons and have established many friends and acquaintances there.

Most of my work is around eighteen by 24 inches - some slightly larger, some slightly smaller. The number would depend on final choice.

I first heard about it from a framer who thought my work would show well in the Common's space. My work is as much about process as it is about emotions. In my world imagery is secondary to the act of art making.  Abstract in nature with an underlying visual order encompassing not only an openness and orderliness but embracing chaos from which each of the works evolve. After altering and adjusting the subtleties and the not so subtleties of the mark making I strive for an atmospheric conclusion. In the process I am incessantly juggling balance, color and emotion. In a constant push-pull activity, I paint, building up, destroying, painting over, leaving what I have a relationship with and eagerly searching for new and harmonious kinships.

I have over 20 pieces that range from 8"x10" to 5'x6'

I graduated from college in 1982 with a BS degree in art education but proceeded to do everything but art for the majority of my adult life. I was a collegiate softball coach after trying both the US Army and the LAPD for short stints. I went on to start my own business in 2005 and then sold it in 2015 to begin my career as a full-time artist. I am currently exhibiting my artwork in a solo show at The Saugatuck Center for the Arts in Michigan, called The Journal Project. It is an exhibit containing 30 pieces of art gleaned from my journals (over 70+) that I have kept since 1979 - chronicling my life as a gay person and everything I went through to find greater self acceptance. It travels next to The Center on Halsted (LGBTQ center) in downtown Chicago.

Please enter the virtual gallery to experience the full effect of
The Journal Project both visually and via audio of my voice reading the stories describing each piece. Explore the gallery by moving around the room to see all 30 pieces and the story. I wanted the artwork to be able to stand alone but the story is AS important as the art work and should be experienced together.
The Journal Project is a year long project I started in 2022. I have accumulated over 70 journals over a 43 year period and counting. I felt that my stories might help others share their stories.

Recommended to me by Chris McCarthy (PAAM)
I have been a life long tourist of the area. As a young gay person it was my safe haven - in the time when we didn't have many in the US. It would be my dream to return to this safe space and utilize my exhibit, The Journal Project, to educate people, create dialog, and inspire others to not only art journal for mental health - but also as a tool to build bridges with people using shared emotional experiences. We need to keep reminding people of what we not only went through but what we are currently going through with the increase in bigotry across out nation. The power of art and storytelling is compelling.

Began cooking and retail in 1970s Ptown to pay my way through undergrad and graduate school. In 2020 I retired after 37 years teaching, first in Texas and then 33 years at San Diego State Univ. Women's Studies Department. Throughout my academic career in women's history and women in medicine, my creative outlet was fueled by teaching and writing six books. But making art in my spare time fed my soul. I am now devoted to creating the art that previously I could only do part-time. I use remnants from the natural world, and found objects from human existence, often with humor, to highlight their interactions.
I bought my small house in Ptown in 1981. I have lived and worked here since the 1970s.

I am a local mixed media and ceramics artist living and working in provincetown. My work focuses on themes of human-environment interactions by blending biological and geological shapes and textures with that of human made artifacts. Working with the center for coastal studies, I incorporate beach clean up debris and found ghost gear into some of these pieces. These works manifest as wearable art jewelry pieces, functional ceramic vessels, as well as stand alone sculptures and wall instillations.
