DAILIES BY STUDIO ARTIST TYLER WOOD
This series came to fruition in a search for consistency and structure. In short, I took a photograph with an attractive composition and traced shapes within the picture plane. I took those shapes and overlapped them until I found an intriguing layout. This abstract arrangement of shapes became the pattern for each of the daily paintings. Theoretically, if I were to do one painting a day, I could have millions of outcomes simply by choosing which of the shapes to paint black.
After a few weeks of the exercise, the act of painting became second nature and the art became the variation of thought and approach to the same question– which shape(s) am I going to paint today?
This is an ongoing series set to start duplication in 367,719.8 years.
Tyler Wood studied art and design at St. Johnʼs University,
Pratt Institute, and Hunter College over the course of ten years
in New York City. Like many creatives, the flow of inspiration came and went. After changing careers many times, each endeavor eventually brought him back to art. When the pandemic began in March of 2020, Tyler chose to finally commit to his dream of becoming a fine artist.
After relocating to Provincetown, Tyler and his partner spent the better half of the year traveling across the United States. In June of 2021, he returned to Provincetown and joined The Provincetown Commons where he began to tell his story of his travels amid the pandemic.
Typically painting in a very precise geometric style, Tyler started to echo the chaos of the world with loose expressive strokes and swaths of oil paint. Inspired largely by his writing and his roots as a color theorist,
his work entices the viewer and brings emotion to life.
