About The Artist

Rik Kapler - aka WAVE, is a Provincetown artist who works in Ceramics and Printmaking. He is an activist who has been steadfast in his commitment to social justice, climate, and LGBTQ issues through various platforms and organizations including the ASG, the UU Meetinghouse, and FAERIE Camp Destiny, among others. He has made Provincetown his home for twenty years.

WAVE’s background in physical and movement therapies plays gently into the hands of his new exhibition at The Commons in both the sacred and fluid nature of the work titled SEA PODS. In this show, the artist pays homage to a traditional American Art Pottery tradition of constructing wall vases, manufactured by companies such as Roseville, Weller, McCoy, to name a few. Wall Pockets are utilitarian objects-of-Art; They were a popular decorative Art form to hold a selection of flowers or seasonal greens, budding branches, pussy willow, etc. In WAVE’s large scale SEA PODS, we are reminded of the much smaller version of wall pockets as we consider the artist's love of nature, and in particular, the Oceans. These Wall Pockets/Vessels/SEA PODS lean toward representations of Life Forms born of the Oceans - unseen but easily imagined. They appear as breathing, moving sea creatures, swimming across the wall, and then suddenly stopping before pausing to look at us.
