PROVINCETOWN DEBUT OPENING AT THE COMMONS
”ESSENCE”
JULY 12-JULY 24, 2022

Provincetown-based artist, James Coté, has been honing his art skills for over several decades. Originally a pastelist, Coté utilized the medium to creatively develop and grow the relationship and interplay of color. Coté was drawn to the multidimensional nature of color. Building new colors by overlaying several others allowed for depth and a sense of realism in his work.

Although Coté started with pastels at an early age, he worked with oils through his formative years. Later, he studied the use of colored pencils under the guidance of Jeanne LaChance. Although Coté does not officially classify himself as a realist, many of his pieces reflect these tangible qualities.

Coté gained early recognition as a member of The Manchester Artists Association, The New Hampshire Art Association, and the Connecticut Pastel Society. His work has been exhibited at the Currier Art Museum in Manchester, New Hampshire and the Hyannis Airport in Massachusetts. Coté was represented by the Act 3 Gallery in Manchester. Since moving to Provincetown in 2016, James has been inspired to continue his creative journey. His work is inspired by the beauty of Provincetown and his travels to Europe. Coté currently resides with his husband in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
