RADIANT LIGHT SANCTUARY BY MYRA KOOY
ON EXHIBIT: AUGUST 6 - AUGUST 18
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, August 16
“Radiant Light Sanctuary is a restorative space, a place where people can find themselves,” Cultural motifs cover the support towers, which resemble totem poles with cutouts. These motifs have paid tribute to abolitionists and social activists.
The space both stimulates and relaxes the body. The viewer walks between painted tar paper and rubber walls and tar and rubber cutout totems lit from the inside with colorful yet soothing neon lights. The painting series “In the Light of Love” consists of canvases and rubber with painted messages and neon lights.
Kooy received her Master of Fine Arts degree from City College in Harlem, and her creations have been shown in numerous galleries. In addition to the AFCC’s Capacity-Building Grant Program, she has participated in artist residencies.
