ANDY TOWLE
New Paintings
“I began painting a few years ago as a weekend hobby and it evolved into a full-time pursuit after leaving an 18-year career running my news website, Towleroad, in 2021. As a painter, I’m interested in capturing the visual magic of the places that live in my memory and imagination. These include subjects from in and around Provincetown, the natural world, the qualities of light at different times of day, and moments I’ve experienced with people I love. Stylistically, I’m drawn to disruptive and magical realism and contemporary romanticism.”
Andy Towle was the founder of the LGBTQ-focused news website Towleroad, which he left in 2021 to focus full time on visual art. Towle was the recipient of a Stegner Fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University and two writing fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, in poetry (1991-92) and fiction (1995-96). Prior to founding Towleroad, Towle was the editor-in-chief of Genre magazine and an editor-at-large for Out Traveler. His poetry has been published in Poetry magazine, The Paris Review, The Yale Review, Christopher Street, Ploughshares, Poetry Northwest, and Manoa, among others. He lives and works in Provincetown.
