Artist Bio
K ROD explores the spiritual and political world through sculpture and assemblage. A former psychologist who practiced in Provincetown from 1981 – 1998 during the AIDS crisis and whose creative practice has included woodworking, candle-making, leather goods, jewelry design, and furniture design, she studied in North Carolina at the Penland School of Crafts. During her 90 days of high school truancy, she spent time at the museums of New York City. K ROD returned to Provincetown in 2019, where she lives and works today having found that the community, light, and spirit of this place deeply informs all she creates.
CONNECTION:
Neurobiologists have found that human beings are hardwired from the moment of birth to seek connection, and yet we act both as a species and as individuals as if our actions are not inextricably linked to the environment, and people around us. The ocean series is an affirmation of my connection to this place at this moment in time and shines a light on marine life that is negatively impacted by humans. The social justice pieces bring darkness into the light because we cannot change what we will not see. What we do matters, and actions have consequences, and inaction also has grave consequences. Our responsibility to change, improve, and fix the world is powerful and implies that each person has a hand in working towards the betterment of his or her own existence as well as the lives of future generations. A portion of cost of each piece will be donated to an organization that is working for change, because with privilege of any kind, we can use that to connect to the common good.
