Provincetown is a special universe. Pomponio wanted to celebrate that universe by creating a body of work with indelible personalities. There is no denying the proprietary authority in the figures of Pomponio’s latest body of work, FREE to BE. Her life-size figures depict a strong sense of self through gesture, while reminding us to be present, engaged, and to follow our hearts. Shifting her mindset from the singular focus of the figure and adding a minimalists’ use of collage, the environment takes on its own playfulness. This new addition of collage lends an added sense of intrigue while strengthening the overall composition of the paintings, making them uniquely her own. Inspired by artists, Kehinde Wiley, Amoako Boafo, Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud, Alice Neel, Francis Bacon, Selina Trieff, to name a few.
Donna Pomponio is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design with Distinction and Departmental Honors. An oil painter for nearly three decades she has shown and sold her work in several galleries and venues around the Boston area, Provincetown, and private collectors from the states and abroad. Currently she works from her studio at The Commons where she is in her third and final year of its residency program.
